Caster Semenya and Gender
Caster Semenya and Gender

Caster Semenya, a 18 year old South African runner, finds herself in the center of a controversy about gender identification. After posting impressive wins in both the 800 and 1500 meter races during the 2009 African Junior Championships, the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) asked Caster to submit to gender identification testing. News that the IAAF requested the test broke hours before Caster was to compete in the 2009 World Championships 800m finals. Caster went on to win the gold in the race with a time that was the world leading time in 2009 at that date setting a national record, championship record, and a personal best by almost four seconds. Reportedly, the results of Caster's gender testing have revealed that the runner has a chromosomal abnormality that means she has no womb or ovaries but internal testes that produce the male hormone, testosterone. News sources are reporting that Caster has gone into hiding and under suicide watch and is receiving trauma counseling in the wake of these claims. Did the IAAF breach its duty of confidentiality? Could this entire situation been handled better? Weigh in.

The sad thing is she found out when the entire world found out. This was handled very poorly. I knew it was going to affect her mentally. I will pray for her because I cannot imagine what she is experiencing. I hope she returns to running and enjoying her life.

I agree. This is so terrible sad for this young woman. She has no control over how she was born. I don't understand how these things tend to come out at the most inopportune times. Why wasn't this questioned long before it got to this point. I just pray God's covering over her and that this trial will make her stronger than ever. She is obviously very gifted and I pray that no weapon formed against her will prosper and she will live a long and healthy life and that the haters will see her rise far above this and excel to even greater heights! Let all stand in agreement for her life.

Yes the situation could have definitely been handled better. Track and Field is probably this GIRL'S world and to have someone question HER human being to be legit is devastating. I feel for HER. Although SHE is 18. SHE is still a child. SHE has ADULTS breathing down HER throat!! SHE didn't ask for male hormone or testosterone, and SHE didn't ask for no ovaries. What if SHE wanted to have kids one day?? This is how SHE was born people!! God made HER that way. Leave HER alone! I've ran track for over 12 years and I don't ever remember reading where it says that you have to have a certain amount of estrogen in your body to compete. SHE's an excellent runner blowing people out the water! SHE the mid-distance version of Usain Bolt. Let HER live happily in HER achievements. Instead of ridiculing HER, congratulate HER!!! Caster Semenya YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is very sad.....whatever the results were it could have been handled better. Think if this girl didn't know about her condition. Possible thinking all this time she was just different. What if she hadn't been in a position to afford testing and where she was in born in South Africa did not have adequate healthcare to find this out. Imagine if at 18 you found out this was you at the same time THE WHOLE WORD FOUND OUT....now the poor girl is on suicide watch!
